Compassionate Carlisle Cullen

Once Carlisle Cullen changed he continually tried to kill himself to no avail. He was too strong. He couldn't commit suicide. He hid in the mountains. While there, he was so thirsty that he attacked a herd of deer. He found much hope in the fact that the animal's blood helped to keep his thirst in check. From then on he became a "vegetarian vampire," as the Cullens jokingly call it.

He then went on to build as beautiful a life as a vampire can. His greatest "power" as a vampire is his compassion. He became a doctor and has been helping humans for centuries. He has no problem being around humans- even in the bloodiest of circumstances because of his centuries of practice of restraining himself.

Carlisle Cullen was lonely, though, after many centuries, and pondered “creating” a companion. As he was helping people during a Spanish Influenza epidemic, he met Edward and his mother Elizabeth. Elizabeth begged him to do all he could to keep her son alive, and she seemed to know that this compassionate vampire had something extra he could do. Elizabeth died, but Carlisle Cullen could not shake the request nor ignore his great desire for companionship. He changed Edward into a vampire. Edward was just 17-years-old, the youngest human age of all of his vampire family at the time of being changed into a vampire.

Several years later, a young woman named Esme was brought to the hospital where he worked. She was so close to death that there was nothing they could do to save her. She had tried to commit suicide after her newborn baby died. Carlisle changed Esme and fell in love with her. They were married for eternity.

Several years later he turned Rosalie Hale into a vampire after he found her dying in the street after her prestigious and drunk fiancé (along with his “friends”) assaulted her. She was extremely beautiful, and Carlisle hoped that she and Edward would fall in love. This was never to be. Edward only loved her as a sister.

Carlisle Cullen changed a young man named Emmett next. Rosalie found him during a hunting trip. He was attacked by a bear and was dying. Rosalie saw something in his face that she loved and she carried him 100 miles to her vampire father, so he could change Emmett. She didn’t trust herself to do it, because she wasn’t sure she could stop from drinking all of his blood. Her father had so much self-discipline that he could do it. Emmett and Rosalie later fell in love and married for eternity.

Jasper and Alice actually found the Cullen Family and joined them. They had already started living a “vegetarian” lifestyle on their own.

Carlisle’s family (or "coven" as it is called in the vampire world) is considered very large as far as vampire families go. The Volturi, who are kind of like scary vampire lawmen, and another vegetarian coven in Alaska are the largest groups of vampires that we know of in the Twilight stories.

This compassionate vampire father continues to work as a medical doctor and he works at the local hospital in Forks. He is amazingly talented as far as doctors go, clearly due to centuries of practice and study. He told Bella on one occasion how hard it was at times, especially if there was an epidemic, to go home after a day’s work and pretend that he was going to go to bed. He wanted so much to stay endlessly and help people. But it was necessary that he put on a show for him to be able to continue his desired lifestyle among humans- to serve them. He is eternally 23-years-old and usually can stay in one place until he is “35.” After that, he must move on.

He is also very handsome, and he looks like a gorgeous movie star. Like most of the vampires, he easily dazzles those in his presence. Peter Facinelli plays Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight Movie.
